If you are 70 or over, you may have heard from us recently. We have been contacting all our patients in this age group to invite them in to discuss their eligibility for a bone density scan — and we want to explain why this matters.
Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease. It rarely causes symptoms until something breaks. By the time a fracture happens — a wrist, a hip, a vertebra — bone loss is usually well advanced. The good news is that osteoporosis is highly treatable, and the earlier we identify it, the more we can do.
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose density and strength, becoming more fragile and more likely to fracture. It is very common — around two in three Australians over 50 have osteoporosis or low bone density — and women are at higher risk after menopause due to the drop in oestrogen.
Why does it matter?
A hip fracture in an older adult often leads to hospital admission, surgery, and loss of independence. Spinal fractures can cause height loss, back pain and a stooped posture. Most of these fractures are preventable with the right diagnosis and treatment.
What is a bone density scan?
A DEXA scan is a quick, painless, low-radiation X-ray that measures the density of your bones. It takes around 15 minutes, you stay fully clothed, and there are no needles.
Am I eligible for a Medicare-funded scan?
Medicare covers a bone density scan for anyone aged 70 or over. It is also covered if you have certain risk factors at any age — including a previous minimal-trauma fracture or long-term steroid use. We can talk you through this at your appointment.
