The early years are an extraordinary time of growth and development, and they go by quickly. Regular check-ups with your GP are one of the simplest, most effective ways to support your child's healthy start — picking up any concerns early, keeping immunisations on track, and giving you space to ask the questions that come up between visits. At Gordon Village General Practice, we love seeing little ones, and all of our GPs are happy to care for babies, children and families.
When should I bring my baby in?
Regular check-ups through the early years give us a chance to watch your child grow, track their development, and catch any concerns early. The first visits often happen in the newborn weeks, with further check-ups across infancy and into the toddler and pre-school years. Many of these visits naturally align with immunisations — each routine immunisation visit doubles as a check-up, giving us a chance to track growth and development and answer any questions you have along the way.
What happens at a check-up?
Your GP will weigh and measure your baby, check growth and developmental milestones, examine eyes, ears, heart, hips and tummy, and discuss feeding, sleep, and any questions or concerns you have. Each visit is also an opportunity to talk about settling, safety, and what to expect next.
Immunisations
Childhood immunisations are provided in line with the National Immunisation Program and are free for eligible children. We aim to make immunisation visits as calm and reassuring as possible, and we are happy to talk you through the schedule, answer any questions, and support you in keeping your child up to date.
Feeding and breastfeeding support
Feeding can be one of the most rewarding — and at times most challenging — parts of early parenthood. Whether you are breastfeeding, formula feeding, mixed feeding, or starting solids, we can help with the practical side and refer to a lactation consultant or paediatrician if more specialised support is needed.
Looking after parents too
The early weeks and months are demanding. Sleep deprivation, feeding worries, and the emotional shifts of new parenthood are real, and they matter. We encourage parents to use these visits as a chance to check in on their own wellbeing — not just baby's.
